Oh Noez! Rein on d Lawnz!

Posted by Nathaniel.

It’s raining here in Maryland again which wouldn’t be an issue if my lawn wasn’t in serious need of a mow. It was semi-torrentially raining last weekend too. I’m actually wondering if I’m going to have to do a quick cut really long and then come back and cut it again mid-week at the right height just so I don’t take off too much at once.

I should have mowed after work yesterday when it was marginally dry. Unfortunately, I don’t have access to a shower right now and the prospect of getting sweaty didn’t seem like fun.

It looks like it’ll be partially sunny on Sunday. Of course, they’re still predicting heavy rain for tomorrow, which happens to be the Preakness.

    (a) What did you do to your shower? And will this take as long as the kitchen project? :)

    (b) So you guys really have been having serious rain, huh? Listening to the Tony K podcast he’s been making it sound like the second Flood, but maybe he’s not exaggerating. We are so far removed from anything resembling a flood that it’s hard to imagine.

    (c) speaking of rainfall and the opposite of that, K’s on a field trip this week that among other things includes a day in Death Valley. I’m no so stoked about the forecast of 110-120 F.

Yeah, the ground around my apt building is just disgusting. It’s one big puddle essentially. And all the nice pits or whatever verizon just dug for FIOS have been flooding to the point of actually popping the covers off the pits. It was, however, pretty funny to watch Mira step on one and spaz out when it moved on her and water squished out. I haven’t bothered with the dog park at all the last few months, cuz they built it in a swamp, Mira likes to lay in the puddles, and I don’t have a hose to wash her down.

    a) we had the tub refinished instead of replacing it. The bathroom currently has an old (original?) deep cast iron tub and it’s hard to even find something comparable. Most new tubs are only 14 inches deep and frankly they’re kind of light and crappy. The existing tub is more like 19 inches deep and it rock solid. Kohler does make some comparable tubs, but they start at $1200… and that’s without the labor to remove the old tub, dispose of it, and then put in the new one. To refinish the tub, they basically rough up the surface, fix any chips or anything, and then put a coat of epoxy over the whole thing. It’s not as durable as the original porcelain, but it’s pretty good. Anyway, the epoxy has a 3 day cure time and that’s now over so I can shower at will.

    b) It’s really wet here. There are a bunch of mature trees just down the street from me that fell down last weekend in just a moderate wind. The soil was so wet that their roots just slipped right through. It’s so wet that our tomato plants are experiencing nitrogen depletion problems because the dirt is so wet.

Luckily, there was a brief break in the weather while they ran the Preakness yesterday and I got the lawn mowed. It’s raining again today though.

    c) 120’s not that bad. It’s dry heat! :)
