For all the special effects that Hollywood comes up with, it’s nice that they still get trumped by reality.
My in-laws have a picture of the ash cloud from Mt. St. Helens as it came towards them (about 150 miles from the mountain) and it looks like of like the images from Independence Day when the alien ships were entering the atmosphere. Perhaps cooler though since you can see all sorts of different length scales in the turbulent flow between the hot dusty air and the cooler clear air.
Dust storms are always cool too.
