It’s kind of amazing what people can live through.
Here’s yet another email saying how handy backups are. I spent yesterday afternoon opening my laptop and switching out the hard drive. It took a total of a half hour to change the hardware, then another 2 hours or so to copy everything from the backup. (100 GB is no small amount of data.)
Now I have everything working again with no problems at all. The old hard drive wasn’t completely dead, but without backups I would have lost most of the music that I’ve purchased from iTunes and it would have taken much much longer to recover.
The lesson here is that all hard drives will eventually fail. They’re complicated and they’re used all the time. If you have a backup, you can save yourself a lot of misery.
