Ferrari-buying advice

Posted by Michael.

With the waiting period now more than two-years (worse than the queue for a Harley), Nathaniel, here’s some advice from Ferarri dealer Michael Mastrangelo:

“It’s very hard to come into a dealership right now and put in a new order if you are not already a customer… When I get a young person, what I say is, let’s start with a used car.”

A used Ferrari? It seems like a Ferrari is something that you should get when it’s brand new. If the article is right and you generally have to wait for a new model before the one that you’ve ordered becomes available, that would just piss me off.

I can understand for a flagship product like the Enzo where prospective buyers really had to audition to buy one, but not for a “normal” model.

The idea of a used Ferrari just made me remember the old Lambo that I saw on the road here. Some of those mid-1980s designs just didn’t age well. It’s doesn’t help that it wasn’t well maintained, but it was just a joke.

Sometimes a used one isn’t all that bad. Not all designs start out with “what were they thinking?” when viewed later in life. I still lust after a 308-348GTI, and now that the earlier ones are nearly two decades old, I can actually think more realistically about owning one. A friend has a red one (348GTI) that he paid all of 35,000 (US) for and it’s in very good shape. In fact, it’s his daily driver spring thru fall. It’s an affordable way to get introduced to the exotic car life (and the various surprises that inevitably come with it). My two bits, for what it’s worth.
