Hawking’s going zero-g

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Not that he couldn’t afford it anyway, but I think he’s earned it.  Pretty neat.  Anyway, he’ll get at least one “drop” of 25 seconds where he can be out of his chair, and I guess able to move under his own muscle power?

Funny girl quotes on baseball

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

The title isn’t meant to be offensive, just to get readers. Anyway, while watching the Sox game last night, K came up with the following list.

Things I Know About Baseball

  • Manny needs a haircut
  • in addition to needing a haircut, he is “good at hitting but shouldn’t be a fielder because he is kinda like me, a little lazy.”
  • “Pawsox!” it’s fun to say. try it.
  • It’s fun to cheer for Big Papi
  • There is lots of facial hair on this team. (Some more unfortunate than others)
  • “Hazel Mae confuses me - she looks like a news anchor but she talks about sports.”

Scott will like this

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

At the risk of being less than polite, I present to you the current (as of this afternoon) AL East standings:

Here’s a prediction (or two) for you: only one team will make it out of the AL East this season. And, if you put Tampa Bay in another division, I bet they’d get pretty close to the Wild Card. Parity is a bitch when it means all the teams are pretty good.

We’re almost into the second round of the NHL playoffs, which means that it’s time for some mullets.

Jagr, straight out of Def Leppard.  Good times.

Nerd Question

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

So, I’m working on modeling the dynamics of two trapped gases - fermions, condensed bosons, and thermal (above Tc) bosons.  I’ve finally worked most of the kinks out and now I want to increase the mesh size, but I am running into what seem to be memory/buffer limits- sometimes it seems to just ‘time out’, where the CPU usage has maxed out and then drops, and sometimes I get a segmentation fault… Anyway, some relevant details:

Fortran, complicated density profiles, iterating over loops of 250×250x250×10, run on my PowerPC Powerbook running Tiger.
