Good movie cowboys aren’t much easier to find…

Friday, November 10th, 2006

Dang, man! For those of y’all who don’t know, Jack Palance passed away today.

Most of us probably know him best as “Curly” from the “City Slickers” comedies of a few years back, but I remember seeing him in some of his other roles, especially those in “Young Guns”, “The Desperados” and, perhaps most memorably, in “Shane”.

Man, I haven’t seen “Shane” in a good long while; think I’ll add that to the top of the Netflix queue… For those of y’all who’ve never seen it, you should. One of the best Western movies ever, no question.

Good ride, cowboy… We’ll miss ya, you old, cantankerous, grizzled original…

A burrito is not a sandwich

Friday, November 10th, 2006

This was decided by a MA judge, in a case between Panera and Qdoba Mexican Grill.  Panera Bread claimed that the a Shopping Center violated an agreement to keep out other sandwich shops when it rented space to Qdoba - so Panera sued, saying that Qdoba’s burritos were sandwiches. Qdoba countered with testimony from a former USDA bigwig and a chef, who said calling a burrito a sandwich “would be absurd to any credible chef or culinary historian.” The judge said the dictionary was clear: A sandwich has two slices of bread, a burrito has a single tortilla.

It shows you how competitive the business is when a bakery cafe feels like it’s in direct competition with a Mexican chain,” said Ron Paul , president of Technomic Inc., a restaurant consulting firm in Chicago. “They’re fighting for a share of the stomach.”
