Third mini-post

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

I knew I had a third thing I wanted to bring up… it’s about the Foley “I’m a republican and we like to fuck underage boys” case.

Anyway, on NPR yesterday they had a little clip of the president saying “Denny [Hastert] is doing a great job.” and it really seems a lot like last year when the president was saying “you’re doing a great job, Brownie.” Of course, that was about the wonderful work that FEMA did after Katrina.

You’re doing a great job Denny.

Work Silliness 2

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

As I was parking my car this morning, I noticed a pretty kick-ass paint job on one of the cars. Well, it’s kick-ass if you think paint that looks purple from one direction and green from another is cool.

Unfortunately, the car in question is a mid-1990s Toyota Corolla. I’m just not sure why you’d bother.

Yesterday there was a post-doc meeting with all of us to “see if there was some way to help integrate the post-docs better into the institute.”

There were a few good points brought up, but I got the most out of the person running the meeting who kept saying things like “I’ve been away on sabbatical for 8 months, so most of you haven’t had the chance to meet me.” and referring to use as “you people.”

I actually felt pretty integrated until the meeting.

Stupid Macintosh

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

Not only is their stock down ~5% in the last couple weeks, but OSX has thoroughly made me irritated.

Ok, so fer serious though. I have been having trouble with my conputer slowing down and my hard drive being constantly fuller than it ought to be. So, I bought a backup drive for my machine and of the supposed 72GB on my HD, only 52 shows up on the backup. Now, I went through and added up the contribution of things on my drive and … surprisingly enough it actually adds up to just about what is on the backup drive. Now, in windows, when you defrag if it finds a corrupted or dammaged portion of the drive it will quarantine it and not let you write to it, but will always tell you. Does OSX do it automatically? Would 20GB of my disk really be fukt? I’m debating just buying a new bigger drive anyway, and reloading all my stuff on it…

Windows blows

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

In case everybody didn’t already know.

The last few days, just about all I have done is reinstall windows, certain drivers and various PC components … over and over again. Apparently windows does not like, among many other things, the on-board ethernet device on this Dell machine I am using here at Eiscat. and the driver it seems to claim is right will not recognize when an ethernet cable is connected… So ultimately I had to scrounge up a PCI ethernet card, which windows recognized and downloaded tons of missing/wrong drivers … all except this stupid network controller driver.
