(1) It is reportedly 80-90% certain that the Sox will trade David Wells within the next 48 hours - he cleared waivers back in the beginning of August and as such can be traded without restriction to any club.
(2) Francona “spoke to Ortiz and said he hasn’t suffered any more episodes”, after Big Papi checked back into Mass General last evening, the second time this month.
(3) ESPN.com has an interesting survey going on - “which player do the Red Sox miss most: David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, or Jason Varitek?” Looking that the regional results, the whole country is blue (for Ortiz) except New England, where Maine, VT, NH, and Mass all picked Varitek. And it’s not just because he wears the C - as I have commented before, the loss of Tek directly correlates to the decline in pitching performance, especially with the youngsters.

This doesn’t quite belong here, but it’s a great quote about Peyton Manning (i.e. sports):

An update on Boomer - he’s likely going to the Padres, in exchange for AAA catcher George Kottaras. Jeremy, your take on him? I’m unfamiliar, other than he’s a solid backstop, average bat.

Re (3): I think that poll is flawed, since it fails to include Wake as one of the most missed on the roster. No question that the long-term absence of Tek and the more recent sidelines of Manny and Papi are felt deeply, but the lack of Wake’s presence should not be overlooked, either.
Freaky? Yeah I think so: 4 out of the 5 players featured on the title banner at the top of the Red Sox home page are currently out of commission, only the Big Schill is left, although Tek is due back very soon…
Even Freakier: Tavarez is getting the start tonight?!? If you ever wanted proof that the season is effectivley over, well, there ya go…
