Billions and Billions of Talks

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

Since it’s summer, they’re apparently having many fewer talks here. However, there are still enough that you could spend a good half of your time just between the various teas and talks.

Other than the waste of time, it really seems like this would be good. You’d get exposed to a wide variety of subjects and learn tons of stuff. There’s just one problem…

they all suck!

I won’t give the topic for today’s talk just in case google leads the speaker here, but here are a few high points.

  • almost zero scientific content
  • a speaker who had his post-doc make the presentation and hadn’t looked at it
  • channeling Mr. Roger’s tone of voice and pacing
  • refusing to answer questions about the return on the research

I haven’t figured out if it’s acceptable to walk out of talks here, so I stayed. I’m really thinking though that it would have been a good idea to fake a bathroom emergency.

    Flight tracking

    Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

we’re all aware of the joy that is Fex-ed tracking, checking in on the status of your package many times per day, watching it wind its way across the country, into your eager and waiting arms.

now, we’ve got something better: celebrity tracking!  that’s right - with a little bit of cleverness and some googling, you can follow private aircraft as they traipse about the globe.

here, for example, is where Dale Earnhardt Jr’s plane is, right now. find another tailsign, track another celebrity.

    Especially for G-money…

    Happy Maddenoliday!

    Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

I confess, I’m not one of the true, dedicated fans. I do not wait for hours, overnight, in a line that stretches around the block, just for the opportunity to spend serious $$$.

But I want to. And so should you.

Here is last year’s article on the matter - I particularly like the bit on athletes on page 4.

Snarky Red Sox Comment of the week……

    Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

since myself and fellow red sox fans in my lab have put a fork in this season, here is the first post in a weekly series until the bums start playing with respectibity…..

during the yankees series the red sox left more men on base than a prom at St. Mary’s Catholic High School for girls.
(best done with a denis miller voice i suppose)

    Nice Summary

    Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

This is a nice little summary of the 2006 Red Sox from Baseball Prospectus:
…The Red Sox are the 2005 Yankees, but without Shawn Chacon and Aaron Small. At the time they were acquired, there was basically no difference between Chacon and Jason Johnson, between Small and Kyle Snyder. The Yankees hit the lottery last year, and the Sox didn’t this year. Where the Yankees got 160 or so innings of above-average pitching from two guys who were useless before that and useless after, the Red Sox got…well, you can read the numbers.

    Hooray Alaska!

    Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

Hooray Alaskan Beer! Too bad we don’t get it this far east, and it’s wicked expensive to have it shipped …

Hooray Hooters! Hooray bartenders! Hooray man laws! Hooray man rules! (note #1,6,27) Hooray beer!
