Extreme geek

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

Ok, we’re not idiots when it comes to computers. We have skillz. If you want to run a piece of software that’s on dactyl via X11, most of you could do it without a problem. (hint: you’d just use ssh -Y and then execute the program from the command line)

What if you wanted to do it from a windows machine though? Or wanted to use the version of KDE on dactyl? Or basically just wanted to see a picture of what’s happening on dactyl’s screen? (or wanted something that was faster across the network than the ssh solution).

The answer, my friends in VNC, and I’m apparently about 3 years behind. Behold however, the following picture of the desktop on dactyl as seen from the screen of my laptop here in Baltimore!

Cell phone craziness

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

A follow-up to my previous cell phone question… I ended up getting a Motorola SLVR. It’s thin and solid and has the advantage of working with iTunes if I ever want to play music on the go. (Which I generally don’t since my iPod only sees use in the car. Well, that’s assuming that Kirsten hasn’t stolen it to use while she runs.)

Back to the point… the phone is anodized aluminum, but I’d still like to find a good case for it. And I did, at Vaja Cases. They’re exceptionally nice leather and fit the phone exactly. Unfortunately, they’re hand made on a custom order basis by leather workers living in the mountains of Spain.

So the real question is this: is $77 too much to spend on a case for a cell phone? Unfortunately, I think the answer is yes.

Check out the site though, they have some really nice iPod cases too. (which aren’t custom-only and therefore cost less than gold)

What do whales and Pepsi from India have in common?

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

answer: they’re both full of toxins.  India doesn’t have purity standards for soft drinks, but the Director of the The Centre for Science And Environment Sunita Narain told journalists in Delhi that samples from 12 states showed that Pepsi products contained 30 times more pesticides than found in 2003.  This is old news, except that it shows that instead of working to fix the problem, it’s getting worse.

Cynically, I’m not surprised at all.  Kinda like how you’re gonna get nicer produce in Anahiem than in South Central, or nice clothes in Manhattan as compared to South Bend, Indiana.
