Facebook’s on the Block

Another link post… apparently facebook is putting itself up for sale.
The amazing part is how much they want: $2 billion. Not bad for a bunch of Harvard sophomores that only put the whole thing together 2 years ago. Then again, it is the 7th most heavily trafficked site on the internet.

Yeah, $2*10^9 sounds a bit high, considering MySpace went for abotu a quarter of that, and it definitely has more traffic.
Oh well, I reckon it won’t change Facebook too much either way, and, if it does, I’ll just quit using it once it stops suiting me.

Of course, myspace sold several months ago… who knows what it would sell for now.

If it ain’t free, it’s gotta be damned good for me to keep using it. and facebook ain’t that good. i doubt anyone actually looks at the pics i have up on it, and i could just write everyone’s phone numbers down instead of looking them up when i need them.

I think the point is to use facebook for advertising, not to charge the users. Since so many people check facebook everyday and they’re in the young and dumb buy anything age group, it’s got to be an advertisers wet dream.

Okay, Nathaniel just said what I was going to, but yeah, there’s no way they’ll charge - the point is for Viacom to prove to investors that they have the flexibility and capital to expand into a trendy/lucrative demographic, with serious advertising potential. It’s still really all about owning the papermill, the printshop, and the newspaper stand, 21st-century-style.

I didn’t think they’d be stupid enough to charge for it, but I’m a little wary of it because I’ve been run off of a few message boards because they suddenly decided to start charging.
