A warning

Monday, March 13th, 2006

Tomorrow on the blog I’m starting a new game called “What injury? What body part?”

The point is to guess what happened to cause the mark and what part of the body it’s on.

I have one really winner picture so far and ideas on how to make a few others. If you have any good injury photos, other people are welcome to join in.

Please though, refrain from pictures like “genital warts from a hooker” on “foreskin.”

Kanye West

I’m starting to go batty from the repetitive research tasks that I’m doing…

Anyway, I’m listening to “Gold Digger” and there’s a line like

She was supposed to buy your shorty Tycho with your money, instead she went to the doctor and got lipo with your money

I think that if I were writing a song, I would have used IBM or GE as the example of a good stock to buy as a long term investment for your children rather than a company that’s an example of corporate malfeasance.

St. Patrick’s Day Season? Brilliant!

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, try here, or here’s the video directly.

so is turning on the tap only to discover beer.

“I turned on the tap to clean some knives and forks, and beer came out,” Ms Gundersen told Reuters news agency. “We thought we were in heaven.”

But the beer was flat and tasted odd, she said.

Daily Show now on iTunes

Monday, March 13th, 2006

In a case of the music/tv industry not being stupid, Comedy Central is taking advantage of iTunes popularity/digital distribution, including the Multi-Pass which “allows users to purchase television episodes in advance for a reduced cost. The Daily Show is available for $9.99 as a Multi-Pass, which includes 16 episodes or one month’s worth of content. The shows can also be purchased for $1.99 per episode, which would cost users $32.00.” I’m curious about their DRM/copyprotection, but overall it’s a smart move for both parties.

APS Madness: Part the Second

Monday, March 13th, 2006  hungry

Well, things are going well so far. Found a good lunch/breakfast/dinner spot right across from the convention center; it’s great because it’s done self-serve cafeteria style and you pay by food weight. Winton, his friend Thomas (a Sewanee undergrad he knows from the recent Key West meeting), and I all seemed to enjoy it.

Still running into old friends, including a buddy from Rice who had been a post-doc at the Naval Research lab, who is now a research analyst for a defense contractor (go, Lars!); also crossed paths with a Rice friend who is now teaching at Trinity, partly because of me. Not only did I “suggest” she apply, but I also put in my good word, which helped. I’m just glad Jen knows she still owes me one.

That’s all for now; more on hotel, transportation, and vendor fair tomfoolery later; it’s time for the afternoon session on quantum wires.

March Meeting Madness

Monday, March 13th, 2006  enthralled

Apparently, in addition to the approximately 10,000 physicists here in Baltimore for the APS March Meeting, there’s also some sort of basketball tournament happening.

Anyways, I’m sitting here flanked by Miles Blencowe to my left and Joel Stettenheim to my right, and we’ve just settled down for the midday session. We’ve opted for a nice fat one full of 30-minute invited talks on spin-based approaches to quantum computing (session B6 for those of y’all keeping score), so i’ll have make this a short post and follow up with more trip details later.

Anyways, the two major highlights thus far:

1) The APS-provided, free wireless access in the convention center is awesome. Hooray Wireless! Hooray APS!

2) I’m having trouble shuttling from one session to the next in between talks without running into at least one person I know. It’s great to catch up with old friends from Rice, Trinity, etc.
