Abstract Day!

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005  working

Whew!

After much last-minute editing (on account of an advisor with a proposal dealine yesterday), all three projects in our group managed to submit Alex-edited and -approved abstracts for the APS march meeting before the 5 PM deadline.

The one Feng and I put together was a bit more complicated, since we had to coordinate it with our collaborators at UW-Madison and their work. Now, we’ve got three months to work on getting all the necessary measurements compelte so that we actually have something to report. Get back to me in February and see if we know anything more about quantum dots in silicon-germanium heterostructures than we do now.

Also, this post was mostly an excuse to make use of the “mylisten” option, ’cause that song is awesome, and definitely my favorite Lyle Lovett tune ever.

QED.

-just thought I’d throw that one out there.

iTunes and Amazon

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

So despite the vote against it, the blog is signed up for two affiliates programs. It looks like there might be monthly minimums for them, so there’s a good chance that nothing will come of it though.

Regardless, if you’re going to buy anything from Amazon or iTunes, click the on the links on the bottom right side of the blog. If you click either of them within 24 hours before buying something, it should get recorded. (Assuming, of course, that you don’t click someone else’s link in the mean time.) If you’re buying something really expensive from Amazon let me know and I’ll change the link to your specific item… that earns a few more points.

Good spending. :)

Thank heavens for first-years

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

I stupidly locked my keys, which I left on my desk instead of in my pocket, in my office when I went to leave at ~10pm. Fortunately the first-year office was well-populated, and I was able to get a key off of James. Thank heavens for the same locks on most doors, as well.

Are people just busy?

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

We’re not getting a lot of blog traffic. Wazzup?

Maybe it’s all tied to the fact that no one is stopping by my office to socialize these days.

Of course, there’s an upside to that. I’m actually getting work done. :)

Commerciallizing the blog

Monday, November 28th, 2005

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a sellout… but that won’t stop me from asking you to click the link in the sidebar to get to Amazon next time you order something.

We’ll not fully approved yet, but I’ll let you know all the details once I’m sure of them.

Doe, a Deer

Monday, November 28th, 2005  hungry

On this, the first day of buck season in Pennsylvania, it seems appropriate that I should hit a deer on the drive back to VT. It was somewhere in MA or VT, I forget where. Fortunately, it was already dead, just lying in the middle of the road. Percy took quite a jolt as we went over it, and I’m hoping there’s no rotting deer flesh stuck to the underside of the car. Otherwise, and I cross my fingers here, there seems to be no damage.

By the by, in my hometown and surrounding regions, it’s unquestioned that the elementary and secondary schools have off the Monday after Thanksgiving, because of the start of buck season. I’m putting this in the “sports” category, as I’m sure that most of my “people” would insist that it is indeed a sport.
