Lunch Special competition

First “Essentials for Men”, now Quiznos and Orient - looks as though the 3 Lebanon St building is moving in the right direction. Even though Subway finally got with the program and has the “toasted” option, I’m stoked about Quiznos.

And, the idea of being able to get decent Chinese food in Hanover without the 50% chance of identity theft is a bonus. :)

Although Orient has no ties to its notorious predecessor, Panda House, some students expressed doubts about the new restaurant.

“Maybe I’ll eat there if they have a clean kitchen,” Eli Meltzer ‘06 said.

and finally, hope for the future: “Quiznos may also institute a student incentives program after winter break to draw customers to the new restaurant.”

Kodak Moment

Spurred on by Nathaniel’s gentle insistence, here’s what I believe to be a fairly nifty photo I took back in the spring, when the fog had really settled in all over the pasture around the house where I live in Lyme.

I think it works even better in black and white.

For the sake of completeness, this photo was taken using the default settings on the old Sony Mavica digital camera I’ve got. To give you an idea of the high quality this contraption produces, you should know it dates from about 1997 and can store about 16 “hi-res” mode photos on a 3.5″ floppy diskette. Fortunately for me, I’m pretty darned nearsighted anyways, so fuzzy pictures don’t bother me so much.

“Artist’s” statement, if you’ll permit me: Willow trees are often used in literature, particularly poetry, as a symbol of death. Back home in Alabama, we get lots of thick heavy fog in Mobile Bay, which the old Spaniard settlers called “La Bahía del Espirito Santo” (English = “The Bay of the Holy Spirit”), and fog has long been associated in many cultures with supernatural or spiritual phenomena. When I was out taking pictures of some heavy fog back in the Spring, I turned around and saw this imposing fog-shrouded willow and thought, “That’s kind of mystifyin’ and such; I need to photograph that.”

Things of note:
(1) that water had to be v. cold.
(2) more impressive about the story is that it was the Boston Harbor! He may have to go on the DL just from toxin exposure…
(3) good for him. was sorry to see him go, especially feeling unwanted. yes his defense was suspect, but Fenway has a brutal infield, and he was a good man to have on the team.

Weird news for today…

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005  weird

Apparently, they still have the old train robbery laws on the books out West.

Also, some folks are just plain creepifyin’.

Horse racing, my ass; that dude was making some kind of Frankenstein stew with them brains. He’s got to be almost as nutty as that German cannibal guy.

a kickass documentary (Hubble and Beyond, i believe it’s called) on Discovery Science Channel about “Miss”* Hubble and the servicing mission in 1999 to fix her gyros and numerous other repairs. Footage of Hubble attached to the shuttle and the astronauts repairing it. Such a beautiful telescope, all shiny and air-free.

* One of my profs at gburg would tell students in the intro astro course, “that’s MISS hubble to you”.
