How classy

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

Discovery Channel is airing a program about the 9/11/01 flight that crashed in PA, entitled “The Flight That Fought Back.” When are they airing it? September 11, at 9pm.

on the other hand, it seems like lots of other channels are running their own shows about 9/11 on or around the date as well. can’t we freaking move on, people?

Another thought on oil

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

In light of Pat Robertson’s stupidity, my buddy had this comment “The best gas to buy is Citgo: it’s from Venezuela. Viva Chavez!”

Anyway, I certainly don’t know the degree to which Saudi oil has funded terrorist action, but there’s an email forward floating around with the following argument:

> >Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every
> >time I fill-up the tank, I am sending my money to
> >people who are trying to kill me, my family, and my
> >friends. I thought it might be interesting for you to
> >know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from
> >and which major companies import Middle Eastern oil :
> >
> >Arab oil:
> >
> >Shell……………………….. 205,742,000 barrels
> > Chevron/Texaco……… 144,332,000 barrels
> >Exxon/Mobil…………… 130,082,000 barrels
> >Marathon/Speedway… 117,740,000 barrels
> >Amoco……………………….62,231,000 barrels
> >If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount
> >to over $18 BILLION!
> >
> >Here are some large companies that do not import
> >Middle Eastern oil:
> >
> > Citgo…………………..0 barrels
> > Sunoco……………….0 barrels
> > Conoco……………….0 barrels
> > Sinclair…………………0 barrels
> > BP/Phillips…………..0 barrels
> > Hess……………………0 barrels
> > ARC0……………………….0 barrels

Sure enough, after some poking around on the DOE website, I found this chart which includes % of oil from the Persian Gulf, by company. The email’s quotation of “zero barrrels” may not be quite accurate, but it’s a far lower percentage, if anybody cares.

NCAA does not have monopoly on stupidity?

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

On a dare from Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny, an unidentified Marlins batboy tried to drink a gallon of milk in under an hour without throwing up.

Penny offered the batboy $500 if he could drink a gallon of milk in less than an hour before Sunday’s game without throwing up. Penny told the paper the boy drank the milk and didn’t throw up, but didn’t finish the gallon in the allotted time frame to win the dare

Why do we care, you ask? Well, the Marlins organization has suspended him for 6 games for accepting the dare. Said Penny, who used to pitch for Florida, “”It’s kind of ridiculous that you get a 10-game suspension for steroids and a six-game suspension for milk… It didn’t affect the way he worked, the way he did his job.”

does this mean we get Adam and Eve animal crackers?

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

Apparently, the London Zoo will have a new exhibit, hoping to “demonstrate the basic nature of man and examine the impact they have on the animal Kingdom.”

Visitors will see the humans, who will be treated like animals, kept amused with games, music and art. But after each day in the open Bear Mountain enclosure the bunch - naked except for well-placed fig leaves - will be allowed home for the night.

This strikes me as kinda funny, somewhat interesting, and probably educational. Something tells me, however, that there would be all sorts of protest if this were to occur in the States.

Speaking of such stupidity, did anybody else see the Onion’s “Intelligent Falling” article? totally awesome, made my day. :)
