Croquet Handles

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

So I just got my package of 6 1.25×48 hickory dowels.

Umm.

I apparently didn’t realize just how large a 1.25 inch dowel is. And when you’re making a mallet you don’t want 75% of the weight to be in the handle.

I need to go to the hardware store tomorrow and feel their dowels. I’m not thinking that 7/8 inch dowels are closer to what I actually need.

On the other hand, the 3/8 inch walnut dowel that I got to pin the handle into the head looks really really nice.

So does anyone have any great ideas for huge dowels?

Check out the preview if you haven’t heard of it. It’s another movie that I’m going to be seeing.

Serenity

Another movie post…

Kirsten suggested that I see if all y’all want to see Serenity when it comes out in September because she feels that she wouldn’t appreciate it at the same level that I will.

So don’t make too many plans for around September 30.

Anyone want to see “The Island”?

It’s playing at the Nugget and I want to see it.

Does anyone else?

Returning one’s nose to the grindstone…

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005  okay

Had a safe return trip from Chicago; lots of fun had while in town, although missed catching up with some of my friends there for various reasons.

Saw the “Dukes of Hazzard” movie over the weekend; general assessment is favorable, but would have enjoyed more car chases and dynamite-laden arrow work over the stilted attempts to concoct a plot slightly more layered in its complexity than the average episode of the old TV show. Still, though, some truly impressive car stunt work, especially when you account for the complete and utter lack of computer-generated anything. Also of note: they had Junior Brown in the role of the Balladeer (narrator), which was a masterful choice (refer to my iTunes for some of Junior’s particular brand of Texas country). Of course, Junior ain’t Waylon Jennings, but he didn’t make the mistake of trying to be, either. Plus, they got smart and kept the original opening theme, as sung by Waylon himself.

Anyways, its back to work now: I figure this week will be spent cleaning research stuff (mostly half-built circuits) off my desk by finishing them up while I work on accumulating and organizing study materials for the quals. Three whole bushels of fun, honest! :P
