Flux calibrating…

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005  annoyed

SUCKS! mindless, mindless typing and clicking. typing and clicking. and for what, you might ask? pretty f*ing pictures. i get a pretty looking spectrum to put in my paper, and if i’m EXTREMELY lucky, and we have enough phase coverage, i get a nice trailed spectrum, which resembles the actual spectrum one would get if you left the exposure continue for the entire period of the orbit, and slowly trailed the star along the slit. and that requires EVEN MORE tedious, tedious work and will more than likely result in failure to achieve said pretty picture.

now we know

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

for those who care, Dutch elm disease is the reason so many trees around the green have been/are being cut down. the alternative is using a very expensive ($200+/gallon) fungicide that’s also way toxic. alas.

“Live From Iraq”

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005  determined

So, if y’all haven’t heard about this or had a chance to give it a listen, you need to do so.

Not only did these guys cut a respectable rap album about the horrors of war in their daily lives using a home-brewed studio they constructed at their post in Baghdad, but they also manage to spread the word about it word-of-mouth-style over the Internet, directly marketing it themselves with no record company in the way.

Fair warning: by virtue of being an artistic expression of the unadulterated truth about the hell that is war, it’s a very intense experience.

Those brave enough are welcome to give a listen off my iTunes (”Deep Fried” on the the network); just search my library for “Live From Iraq”.

phone?

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

So after I said goodbye to Nathaniel’s cute kitties, I came over to my new apartment and am waiting for the phone company. They said they would be here between 8 am and noon. So far, no sign of them. When I called to make an appointment, they gave me a number to call if they don’t show. That can’t be a good sign. I am giving it about a 43.7 percent chance of phone company arrival today.
I have a bunch of my stuff to unload from the car and put away, and some work to do to keep me busy, but it would be nice if I do not have to do this again later in the week.
*crosses fingers*
